Birding & Wildlife Expedition to Kenya

APRIL 4 - 18 . 2024

See secretary birds and a variety of raptors, bee-eaters, hornbills, eagles, ostriches, weavers, the Big Five Mammals and a good sample of East Africa’s bird species from dry savannah in the Rift Valley through tropical rainforest to mountain cloud forest and wetlands.

 

Sites visited will include Lakes Naivasha, Nakuru and Baringo in the rich Rift Valley, Mpala  Research Station, Kakamega Forest and the famous Maasai Mara with its herds of wild mammals.

 


SAFARI FEE INCLUDES:

  • lodging, meals, water and drinks (non-alcoholic), the services of a camp manager, cook and helper, guide services, and park and special entrance fees.

NOT INCLUDED ARE:

  • alcoholic beverages, medication, passport and visa fees, transportation to or from departure or end points, and phone calls.

ITINERARY

DAY 1:

ARRIVE IN NAIROBI (ARRIVAL, MEET & GREET)

  • Upon arrival at JOMO KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BUNDUZ LIMITED SAFARI representatives welcomes you to East Africa. You will thereafter be transferred to your hotel in Nairobi.

  • Overnight in Nairobi

 

 

DAY 2:

NAIROBI - REST DAY

  • With all the jetlag & long travel hours, this is a relaxed morning. We have a late breakfast at 0900HRS and depart for the nearest shopping mall for money exchange, SIM card registrations (for those want) & some small shopping for the road trip. Also, this could be an excellent opportunity for introduction to East African bird species. We could also do bird walks around Camp.

  • Lunch, Dinner & Overnight in Nairobi.   

 

DAY 3:

NAIROBI - MPALA RESEARCH CENTRE

  • On this day, we have breakfast at 0700HRS and aim to leave by 0830HRS towards Mt. Kenya for Mpala Research Centre. Located in an African savannah ecosystem, Mpala catalyzes and disseminates interdisciplinary and impactful research on the most pressing issues of our time, particularly those related to the environment, sustainability, and human development.  

  • Lunch, dinner & overnight at Camp, Mpala Research Center.  

DAY 4:

BIRDWATCHING & GAME DRIVES IN MPALA RESEARCH  CENTRE

  • This day is full of bird walks near & around Camp. Later in the afternoon after lunch, we can do a short game drive to spot more birds & some mammals.

  • Dinner & Overnight at Camp, Mpala Reserch Centre. 

DAY 5:

MPALA RESEARCH CENTRE - LAKE NAIVASHA

  • After breakfast at 0700HRS, we depart from MPALA R.C, LAIKIPIA at 0800HRS through the scenic landscapes to Lake Naivasha. We stop briefly at the Thompson Falls in Nyahururu for lunch and proceed southwards. Arrive Naivasha mid afternoon. After check-in, spend your afternoon relaxing at the lodge and enjoying nature.

  • Dinner & Overnight at Lake Naivasha. 

DAY 6:

LAKE NAIVASHA (CRESCENT ISLAND SANCTUARY & HELLS GATE)

  • After breakfast at 0800HRS, we depart with boats for the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary at 0900HRS. Here, we get an opportunity to spot mammals & several species of birds. We head back to the Lodge for lunch at 1300HRS and visit Hells Gate National Park thereafter at 1500HRS.

  • Dinner and overnight at Lake Naivasha. 

 

DAY 7:

LAKE NAIVASHA- MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE

  • After an early morning breakfast 0730HRS, we depart to the famous Masai Mara known for its fauna than its avian assets, but the reserve features a number of habitats conducive to great bird watching. Arrive Maasai Mara for lunch. In the evening at 1530HRS, we leave for a Game drive to look out for birds and other wildlife species. 

  • Dinner & Overnight in Maasai Mara. 

 

DAY 8:

MAASAI MARA (FULL DAY GAME DRIVE) 

  • After an early morning game drive at 0600HRS, we return to lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, we rest and spend time at the lodge spotting more birds. Lunch at 1300HRS and ater in the afternoon at 1530HRS, we go for an evening Game drive.

  • Periods of high rainfall from November to June cause the hilly grasslands to erupt into life and the richly forested areas surrounding the Mara River are another popular habitat for hundreds of birds. Add to this, Acacia woodland, swamps, non-deciduous thickets, rocky escarpments and thorny scrub and you have a veritable ornithological paradise. Water is not a problem either, with two permanent rivers, the Mara and Talek, flowing through the reserve. Each habitat is a treasure trove for the avid birder and likely to produce desirable sightings. Approximately 450 species of birds, including 46 species of raptor, have been recorded in the Masai Mara, from tiny sunbirds to lanky ostriches.  

  • Dinner and overnight in Mara 

DAY 9:

MASAI MARA - LAKE ELEMENTAITA (BREEDING SITE FOR PELICANS) 

  • Breakfast at 0730HRS on this day and we depart for Lake Elementaita at 0830HRS. Arrive in time for lunch at the lodge. In the evening we take a bird walk around the Lake trying to identify the available bird species including Feral lovebirds, Avocets, Klaas; Cuckoo, Glossy Ibis, Black Heron, red Billed Teal, Black Tailed godwit, Blacksmith Plover, Pelicans among many other birds. The Lake is a home to over 300 species of birds.  

  • Dinner and overnight in Elementaita.  

DAY 10:

LAKE ELEMENTAITA- LAKE BARINGO 

  • We have breakfast at 0730HRS and drive further North to Lake Baringo at 0830HRS. The Lake is a fresh water Lake with its own share of birdlife species like the White Faced Scopes Owl, Brimstone Canary, Bristol Crowned Starling, Goliath Heron, Little Weaver, Jacksons and Hemprich’s Hornbill, Black Throated Barbet, Mouse Collared tit among many others.

  • Dinner & Overnight at Lake Baringo.  

DAY 11:

LAKE BARINGO 

  • After breakfast at 0800HRS, we leave for a motorboat tour of the lake, your ornithologist captain will point out many water birds, including the world’s largest flying bird, the Goliath heron. The African openbill stork is amazing to see, a wading bird with a large, unique bill that only meets at the tip. Return to the hotel for lunch and later in the afternoon, you have an option of going for a guided bird walk or spending your time relaxing at the hotel.  

  • Dinner and overnight at the Lodge. 

DAY 12:

LAKE BARINGO- KAKAMEGA FOREST

  • Depart Baringo for Kakamega Forest National Reserve for an extensive bird walk in this only and unique remaining rain forest in Kenya with some of the rare species in the world. Arrive in time for lunch. Later in the afternoon, you can take a bird walk around the hotel. 

  • Dinner and overnight in Kakamega. 

DAY 13:

KAKAMEGA FOREST

  • After an early morning bird walk, return to the hotel for breakfast and thereafter leave for unforgettable bird watching experience in Kakamega forest.Our bird menu here will include the Grey Parrot, Turacos, Turner’s eremomela, Little Grey Greenbul, Brown snake eagle, Hammerkop, African Goshawk, Herons, Augur Bazzard, Eurasian Marsh Harrier among many others. The forest is a home of over 300 species of birds, 400 species of butterflies and 27 species of snakes (famous Gabon Bush Viper).  

  • Dinner & Overnight at the Hotel in Kakamega Forest. 

DAY 14:

KAKAMEGA FOREST- NAIROBI

  • Today will be quite a long journey; we will have an early morning bird walk, breakfast at 0700HRS and depart for Nairobi thereafter with our boxed lunches. We shall stop to stretch as we have our picnic lunches and proceed with the journey. 

  • Dinner & overnight in Nairobi. 

DAY 15:

NAIROBI- AIRPORT DROP-OFF

  • This marks the last day of our epic Bird trip. An easy morning with breakfast at 0800HRS and bird walks in the morning. We shall have a relaxing morning at Camp and lunch at Camp. The afternoon is left open for some last minute shopping or relaxing at Camp before our last group dinner and head to the airport for flight back home.
